Pierce County, WA (October 1, 2025) – A violent crash on Monday morning, September 29, left a toddler injured and a reckless driver under arrest after a high-speed collision on the Key Peninsula Highway.

Witnesses said a black SUV sped through the Key Peninsula area around 10:17 a.m., swerving into oncoming lanes and passing cars at nearly 90 miles per hour. Drivers described the SUV as “all over the road,” creating dangerous conditions for everyone nearby.

Moments later, the SUV reportedly veered off the road and crashed into bushes in Key Center. Onlookers saw the driver, a man in his 40s, stumble out of the damaged vehicle before climbing back inside and driving away again. The SUV, already severely damaged and riding on a flat tire, continued recklessly down Key Peninsula Highway Northwest.

At about 10:32 a.m., the SUV slammed into another vehicle in the 9700 block of the highway. That car was carrying a driver and a toddler. The force of the impact crumpled both cars and left the child with a broken bone. Paramedics rushed to the scene, provided urgent care, and transported the toddler and other injured occupants to a nearby hospital for further treatment.

Deputies arrested the suspected impaired driver soon after the crash. They said he appeared extremely intoxicated and later obtained a warrant for a blood sample. Authorities closed the Key Peninsula Highway in both directions for several hours while they investigated and cleared the wreckage.

Authorities are investigating the crash and reviewing whether alcohol, drugs, or other reckless actions caused the collision.

    Car Accidents in Washington

Serious car crashes remain a major safety issue across Washington, especially when reckless driving and impairment are involved. Roads like the Key Peninsula Highway can be dangerous because of sharp curves, limited visibility, and heavy local traffic. At very high speeds, even a small mistake can lead to catastrophic injuries.

    Severe collisions often cause:

    • Head Injuries: Even one crash impact can cause lasting changes in memory, mood, and focus.
    • Spinal Cord Injuries: Damage to the back or neck can lead to paralysis or chronic pain.
    • Broken Bones: Fractures often require surgery and lengthy rehabilitation.
    • Internal Injuries: Hidden bleeding or organ damage may become life-threatening if not treated quickly.

Head injuries are especially serious and often overlooked. The brain is a soft and delicate organ, making it highly vulnerable to damage. Even a low-speed crash can cause hidden trauma that may not show symptoms right away.

Victims may experience headaches, dizziness, confusion, memory issues, mood changes, or sleep disruption. Early medical evaluation is critical to detect and treat these injuries before they worsen.

Recovering from a serious collision can be overwhelming. Victims and families often face long hospital stays, costly rehabilitation, and time away from work. Insurance companies may offer fast settlements that fail to cover future care or ongoing losses.

It’s important to work with a personal injury attorney who understands car accidents and the complex issues of liability and insurance. Skilled legal guidance helps victims secure fair compensation for medical treatment, lost income, and long-term support.
