Leavenworth, WA (August 19, 2025) – A chain-reaction collision involving four vehicles brought traffic to a halt along US 2 near the Nason Creek Rest Area on Monday afternoon, August 18. The crash, which took place around 4:30 p.m., left four people injured and caused a complete shutdown of the highway in both directions for several hours.

According to the Washington State Patrol, the incident occurred when westbound traffic slowed due to congestion. A black Kia Soul, attempting to bypass the slow-moving cars, crossed a double yellow line in an attempt to pass. After reentering the westbound lanes, the Kia struck a white Kia Soul, which spun and hit an unoccupied vehicle parked on the shoulder. This caused both vehicles to block the westbound lanes.

The black Kia then struck another vehicle it had initially tried to pass, coming to a stop in the eastbound lanes. Emergency crews, including a medical helicopter, responded to the scene and transported injured parties to area hospitals. The 59-year-old Florida man driving the black Kia Soul was flown to Harborview Medical Center. His passenger, a 51-year-old woman from Mukilteo, was taken to Central Washington Hospital.

The driver and passenger of the white Kia Soul, both 24 years old and from Philadelphia, were also transported to Harborview Medical Center. The driver of the third vehicle was not injured. The fourth vehicle was unoccupied at the time of the collision. The highway remained closed for several hours as officials investigated.

    Car Accidents in Washington

Washington State experiences thousands of vehicle collisions each year. According to recent data, US 2 is among the state’s most heavily traveled routes, often seeing delays and sudden slowdowns that can lead to multi-car pileups. In 2023, Washington recorded over 100,000 reported crashes, a significant number of which involved unsafe passing, distraction, or driver inattention.

Accidents like these can result in a variety of injuries and long-term consequences. Below are common types of injuries people face after car accidents and why they matter:

    • Traumatic Brain Injuries (TBIs): The brain’s soft tissue is vulnerable during collisions, often leading to TBIs that can affect memory, mood, sleep, and hormonal balance. TBIs may take days or weeks to appear.
    • Spinal Cord Injuries: High-impact crashes can compress or sever the spinal cord, leading to partial or full paralysis and chronic pain.
    • Whiplash and Neck Injuries: Rear-end and sudden-impact crashes often lead to neck strain or cervical spine damage, sometimes requiring months of rehabilitation.
    • Internal Injuries: Blunt force trauma from seatbelts or steering wheels can injure organs like the liver or lungs, often requiring emergency surgery.
    • Fractures and Broken Bones: Legs, arms, ribs, and facial bones are frequently fractured in high-speed crashes, often requiring surgical intervention.
    • Emotional and Psychological Trauma: Many crash victims suffer anxiety, PTSD, or depression following a serious accident, especially if injuries are severe or recovery is prolonged.

Working with a personal injury attorney who has experience handling car accidents is essential after being involved in a serious crash. It allows victims to understand their rights and make informed decisions about recovery and compensation. Timing is crucial—delays can affect evidence gathering, medical documentation, and your ability to pursue fair compensation.
