Tacoma, WA (November 11, 2025) – A serious collision left one man critically injured on Monday, November 10, after a driver struck two people and then crashed into another vehicle in Pierce County.

Deputies with the Pierce County Sheriff’s Department responded around 2:00 p.m. to the 2400 block of 96th Street South near the Woodmark Apartments. Witnesses said two men, one on a bicycle and the other on a skateboard, were crossing the street from south to north when a vehicle suddenly accelerated toward them.

The impact threw the 31-year-old bicyclist onto the pavement, leaving him with life-threatening injuries. The skateboarder narrowly avoided being hit. Moments later, the same vehicle crossed into oncoming traffic and crashed head-on into another car carrying a woman and her approximately one-year-old child. Both sustained minor injuries and were taken to a nearby hospital for treatment.

Emergency crews worked to free the bicyclist, who was pinned and in visible distress after the crash. Paramedics stabilized him at the scene before rushing him to a local hospital for critical care.

Deputies arrested the driver at the scene on suspicion of vehicular assault. Investigators said that if the bicyclist does not survive, the charge could be upgraded to vehicular homicide. The Pierce County Sheriff’s Department continues to investigate the crash and will release more information as it becomes available.

    Bicycle Accidents in Washington

Bicycle crashes are alarmingly frequent across Washington, especially in urban and suburban areas like Pierce County. State data shows that hundreds of cyclists are seriously injured each year due to collisions with vehicles. These incidents often occur during peak commuting hours when traffic is heaviest and visibility is limited.

Common causes of bicycle accidents include:

    • Speeding or reckless driving
    • Distracted driving, such as texting behind the wheel
    • Failing to yield at intersections or crosswalks
    • Driving while impaired by alcohol or drugs
    • Reduced visibility and driver inattention near residential areas

When a car strikes a cyclist, the consequences are often catastrophic. Cyclists have little protection from impact, and even a moderate-speed collision can result in broken bones, internal injuries, and severe head trauma. Among these, brain injuries are especially dangerous. The brain is a soft and delicate organ that can suffer lasting damage even from seemingly minor impacts. Victims often experience headaches, dizziness, confusion, or memory loss in the hours and days following the crash.

It is essential to work with a personal injury attorney experienced in bicycle accidents to ensure that you receive proper medical care and fair compensation. These cases often require detailed investigation, expert medical evaluation, and skilled negotiation with insurers. Compensation may include payment for medical expenses, rehabilitation, lost income, and pain and suffering.
