Seattle, WA (November 24, 2025) – A worker died after a scissor lift tipped over on a barge near the Duwamish Waterway. The Seattle Police Department said the incident happened in an industrial area of South Seattle. Crews reached the site near South Riverside Drive and South Austin Street around 1:35 in the afternoon on Saturday, November 22.

When officers arrived, they found a 26-foot lift from Sunbelt Rentals lying on its side. The lift was almost fully extended and pinned the worker underneath. A co-worker told police the man was welding a beam from the lift platform. The lift became unstable and started to fall.

The worker tried to jump away as it tipped. He hit the ground, but the lift landed on him and caused fatal head injuries. The witness believed the man was not strapped in while working on the lift.

The investigation into the exact cause of the incident remains underway.

    Industrial Workplace Accidents in Seattle

Fatal incidents like this one highlight the risks workers face in Seattle’s industrial and maritime zones. Jobs involving elevated platforms, welding, and heavy equipment can turn dangerous in seconds if something shifts, fails, or is used without proper safeguards.

Scissor lifts are common on construction sites, shipyards, and warehouse projects because they allow workers to reach high areas quickly. But their stability depends on level surfaces, correct setup, and consistent safety practices.

Some of the most common factors in lift-related workplace accidents include:

    • Uneven or shifting ground or surfaces, including barges and temporary platforms
    • Overextension or improper positioning of the lift
    • Missing guardrails, harnesses, or tie-off systems
    • Poor maintenance, mechanical failure, or worn parts
    • Rushed timelines that lead to skipped safety checks

When a fatal workplace accident occurs, families may face sudden financial and emotional strain. They may also have questions about whether safety rules were followed, who was responsible for equipment oversight, and what benefits are available.

It’s important to work with a wrongful death attorney who understands personal injury claims in Seattle and can review the facts, gather records, and explain what legal paths may exist beyond basic workers’ compensation. Depending on the situation, families may be able to pursue damages tied to lost income, funeral costs, and the loss of companionship and support.

At the same time, clear documentation matters. Investigation reports, rental logs, training records, and witness statements can make a major difference in determining liability and what recovery is possible.
