South Prairie, WA (November 5, 2025) – A pedestrian was killed after being struck by a vehicle on Tuesday, November 4, on State Route 162 east of South Prairie in Pierce County.

The crash occurred around 6:16 a.m. along a two-lane section of the highway between South Prairie and Orting. Investigators said a vehicle traveling on State Route 162 hit a pedestrian in the roadway, throwing the person several feet on impact.

Emergency crews arrived within minutes and found the victim unresponsive. Despite immediate life-saving efforts, the victim died at the scene.

The driver remained on site and cooperated with investigators. Troopers shut down both directions of the route for several hours while crews gathered evidence, measured skid marks, and photographed the scene. Officials are reviewing whether speed, distraction, or visibility played a role in the collision.

    The investigation remains ongoing.

    Pedestrian Accidents in Seattle

Fatal pedestrian crashes continue to rise across Washington. These incidents are especially common on rural highways where speeds are high and visibility is limited. Roads like State Route 162 can be especially dangerous at dawn or dusk, when glare and fog make it difficult for drivers to see pedestrians in time.

Common causes of fatal pedestrian accidents include:

    • Speeding: High speeds reduce reaction time and increase crash severity.
    • Driver Distraction: Phones, food, or navigation systems divert attention from the road.
    • Low Visibility: Early-morning fog and darkness make pedestrians harder to see.
    • Failure to Yield: Drivers frequently overlook pedestrians crossing lawfully.
    • Impairment: Alcohol or drugs slow judgment and reaction time.

When a pedestrian is hit, the consequences are often devastating. Without the protection of a vehicle, pedestrians are vulnerable to severe or fatal injuries. Families left behind face emotional trauma and sudden financial strain from funeral costs, lost income, and medical more.

It’s important to work with a wrongful death attorney who understands pedestrian accidents. A skilled legal team can help families determine liability, gather evidence, and pursue compensation for their losses. Compensation can cover loss of financial support, emotional suffering, and other related costs.
