Puyallup, WA (August 21, 2025) – A fatal pedestrian crash disrupted early morning traffic along State Route 167 near Puyallup on August 20. The incident took place around 6:32 a.m. near 44th Street East, according to the Washington State Patrol.

Investigators say a pedestrian was walking along the highway when they were struck by a pickup truck traveling south toward Puyallup. The driver remained at the scene and cooperated with authorities. The pickup driver was not under the influence, according to Trooper John Dattilo.

Officials are also investigating whether a second vehicle, possibly a garbage truck, made contact with the pedestrian after the initial impact. Emergency crews responded and closed the highway between 50th Avenue East and 44th Street East while they worked the scene and began their investigation. The roadway has since reopened.

This incident remains under investigation by the Washington State Patrol. The name of the pedestrian has not been released.

    Pedestrian Accidents in Washington

Washington sees hundreds of pedestrian accidents every year, many resulting in severe injury or death. Data from the Washington State Department of Transportation shows that pedestrian fatalities have risen steadily over the past decade, often due to high speeds, lack of visibility, or poorly marked crossings.

These tragic events bring attention to common risks pedestrians face and provide a moment to reflect on pedestrian safety. Below are several key factors that contribute to these incidents:

    • Poor visibility conditions: Dim lighting, early morning hours, or poor weather can make pedestrians harder to see, increasing the risk of being struck by vehicles.
    • High-speed roadways: Roads like highways or state routes often have higher speed limits and less pedestrian infrastructure, making them especially dangerous for those on foot.
    • Distractions by drivers or pedestrians: Mobile device use is a growing factor. Even a few seconds of distraction can lead to tragic outcomes.
    • Lack of crosswalks or sidewalks: When designated pedestrian spaces are missing, individuals may be forced to walk along or across busy roads, putting them at risk.
    • Driver misjudgment or failure to yield: In many cases, drivers either fail to notice pedestrians or incorrectly assume they have the right of way.
    • Impaired or fatigued drivers: Even if alcohol is not a factor, drivers who are overly tired or on medication can exhibit slower reaction times.

It’s important to work with a personal injury attorney who has experience handling cases involving pedestrian accidents. An attorney can help families understand their rights and pursue compensation for losses following a fatal incident. When lives are lost, filing for wrongful death claims may be the necessary legal step.

Families should reach out to a trusted attorney as soon as possible after a fatal crash to preserve evidence, interview witnesses, and begin building a claim. The earlier these steps begin, the better the chance of recovering fair compensation. Time limits apply to wrongful death claims, and waiting too long can affect the outcome.
