Tacoma, WA (August 22, 2025) – A deadly crash occurred along Interstate 5 in Tacoma on Thursday afternoon, August 21, after a car collided with a motorcycle near South 56th Street. The crash, which happened around 2:24 p.m., resulted in the death of the motorcyclist.

According to the Washington State Department of Transportation, both vehicles were headed northbound in one of the center lanes. The woman driving the car reported seeing the motorcyclist behind her, riding between two lanes on the broken white lines, a maneuver often referred to as lane-splitting.

As the driver attempted to merge into the left lane, she allegedly struck the motorcycle. It remains uncertain whether the motorcyclist was also trying to merge at the time of the crash. The collision caused the motorcyclist to be thrown from the bike. He died at the scene.

Authorities confirmed that he was an adult male. The driver of the vehicle was not injured, and police reported she showed no signs of impairment. She has been cooperative with the investigation, which remains ongoing.

    Motorcycle Accidents in Washington

Motorcycle crashes in Washington often result in serious injuries or fatalities. The state’s varied weather and busy highways contribute to hazardous conditions for motorcyclists. According to recent statistics, motorcyclists are overrepresented in fatal collisions compared to drivers of other vehicles. This is due to a combination of factors such as reduced visibility, lack of physical protection, and aggressive driving from nearby vehicles.

In the aftermath of a motorcycle crash, it’s important to understand the key issues victims and families often face. Below are a few considerations that are commonly encountered:

    • Legal Liability: Motorcycle crashes often lead to disputes over who was at fault. These cases may involve multiple parties, eyewitnesses, and complex details that need to be carefully examined to determine liability.
    • Insurance Complications: Dealing with insurance companies after a crash can be overwhelming. Victims may face pressure to accept quick settlements that do not reflect the full extent of their damages.
    • Medical Costs: Even a non-fatal motorcycle crash can result in substantial medical expenses. Treatments, surgeries, and long-term rehabilitation can place a heavy financial burden on victims and their families.
    • Physical Recovery: The path to recovery following a motorcycle crash may involve months or even years of treatment. Injuries like fractures, head trauma, or spinal injuries can drastically alter a person’s life.
    • Emotional Trauma: Survivors and family members often struggle with emotional aftereffects. These can include anxiety, PTSD, or depression triggered by the accident or loss.
