Seattle, WA (August 12, 2025) – Late Saturday morning, August 9, emergency crews were called to the Greenwood neighborhood following a collision involving a motorcycle and an SUV. The incident occurred just before noon near the intersection of North 85th Street and Linden Avenue North.

According to Seattle Police Department officials, officers arrived to find a 33-year-old motorcyclist critically injured in the roadway. Firefighters provided immediate care before transporting the victim to Harborview Medical Center with life-threatening injuries. A 27-year-old man, believed to be the driver of the SUV, was located nearby.

Investigators determined that a red Ford SUV had been traveling westbound along North 85th Street before attempting a U-turn to head eastbound. While the vehicle was making the turn, the motorcyclist, traveling behind the SUV, changed lanes to pass and struck the vehicle.

Authorities reported that a drug recognition expert evaluated the SUV driver and determined he was impaired at the time of the crash. Further checks revealed that the driver’s license was suspended, he had no insurance, and there was an active warrant for assault. The driver was taken into custody and booked into King County Jail on suspicion of vehicular assault.

The Seattle Police Department stated that the investigation remains open. Anyone with additional information has been asked to contact the Traffic Collision Investigation Squad.

    Motorcycle Accidents in Washington

Motorcycle accidents in Washington can lead to severe and life-changing injuries due to the lack of protection for riders. Data from the Washington Traffic Safety Commission shows that motorcycle collisions account for a disproportionate number of serious and fatal crashes compared to passenger vehicles. Safety equipment, proper training, and awareness from all motorists are critical in preventing these incidents.

Understanding the risks of motorcycle crashes highlights the importance of knowing some of the most frequent contributing factors:

    • Impaired Driving: Alcohol or drug impairment slows reaction time and reduces judgment, significantly increasing crash risks for all road users.
    • Unsafe Lane Changes: Sudden lane changes without signaling or checking blind spots can easily put a motorcyclist in harm’s way.
    • Excessive Speed: High speeds reduce the time available to respond to hazards, making collisions more likely and injuries more severe.
    • Left-Turn Accidents: Many motorcycle collisions occur when vehicles make left turns in front of oncoming bikes, often due to misjudging distance or speed.
    • Inadequate Following Distance: Tailgating leaves little room for a rider to maneuver or stop if traffic changes suddenly.

It is important to work with a personal injury attorney who has experience handling cases involving motorcycle accidents in Seattle. Having legal representation early ensures that evidence is preserved, witnesses are contacted, and your rights are protected from the start. Waiting too long can make it harder to build a strong case, especially in collisions involving impairment or disputed fault. Early legal involvement also allows your attorney to coordinate with your medical providers to fully document injuries and ensure your long-term needs are considered in any claim.
