SeaTac, WA (September 22, 2024) – A motorcycle rider was injured Saturday evening, September 20, in a three-vehicle collision that blocked northbound lanes of Interstate 5 near 188th Street.

The Washington State Patrol reported the crash happened around 6:30 p.m. A sedan and a motorcycle traveled north in lane three, while another vehicle moved north in lane five. Both the sedan and motorcycle attempted to merge into lane four at the same time.

The sedan struck the motorcycle, forcing it into lane five, where it collided with the third vehicle. The motorcycle and the third vehicle came to rest on the left shoulder. The sedan then continued north for approximately six miles before stopping in a parking lot in Burien. Troopers said speed caused the crash and confirmed no involvement of drugs or alcohol.

The motorcycle rider suffered injuries and was transported to Harborview Medical Center. Washington State Patrol confirmed the rider wore a helmet. The driver and passenger of the third vehicle were not injured.

Troopers charged the sedan driver with vehicular assault and reckless driving. Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the collision.

    Motorcycle Accidents in Seattle

Motorcycle accidents in Seattle often lead to severe injuries because riders have limited protection compared to car occupants. Highways like Interstate 5 are especially dangerous, where speed and heavy traffic combine to create a higher risk of collisions.

Some of the most common causes of motorcycle crashes include:

    • Drivers failing to see motorcycles while changing lanes
    • Speeding that reduces reaction time and increases collision force
    • Distracted driving, including texting or adjusting in-car devices
    • Road hazards such as uneven pavement, gravel, or slick conditions

Crashes that involve motorcycles frequently cause lasting harm. Broken bones, spinal cord injuries, and traumatic brain injuries (TBI) are common after these incidents. Even when riders wear helmets, they remain vulnerable to head trauma and other catastrophic injuries. It’s important to work with a personal injury attorney who understands the complexities of motorcycle accidents and can guide victims through the claims process.

Because the brain is a soft and delicate organ, even low-speed accidents can cause long-term complications. Victims may face memory loss, mood changes, balance problems, or difficulty concentrating.
