Olympia, WA (July 1, 2025) – Early Saturday morning, a suspected DUI crash left one person dead and blocked the southbound Black Lake Boulevard off ramp for several hours in Olympia.

According to the Washington State Patrol, the collision occurred shortly after 1 a.m. on June 28 when a man, believed to be under the influence of drugs or alcohol, crashed his vehicle along the off ramp. Officials reported that the driver lost control of the car, which eventually came to a stop on the right shoulder. After the incident, the driver contacted authorities himself. While neither he nor his passenger sustained injuries, at least one other person lost their life in the collision. Details about the victim have not been released at this time.

WSP Trooper Shannon McKenzie confirmed that the driver was booked into the Thurston County Jail on suspicion of vehicular homicide and driving under the influence. Thurston County Sheriff Derek Sanders shared that the crash scene required an extended response and clean-up effort, leading to the off-ramp being closed for approximately three and a half hours. Law enforcement is continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding this crash.

    DUI Accidents in Washington

Every year, Washington faces a troubling number of DUI-related crashes that result in serious injuries or fatalities. Impaired driving continues to be one of the most preventable causes of roadway deaths statewide. From urban intersections to rural roads, alcohol and drug impairment place countless lives at risk. Understanding the severe consequences of impaired driving highlights the need for responsible choices behind the wheel.

It’s important to recognize how these crashes can impact victims and their families:

    • Wrongful Death: DUI crashes are among the top contributors to wrongful death cases. Surviving family members are often left to cope with unexpected loss, funeral expenses, and emotional hardship. Legal action can help families pursue accountability and fair compensation for their suffering.
    • Long-Term Medical Care: Survivors of DUI crashes frequently face long recoveries. Injuries such as traumatic brain injuries, spinal cord damage, or internal trauma may require extensive treatment and rehabilitation. Ongoing care can place a financial burden on victims and loved ones.
    • Emotional and Psychological Effects: Beyond physical wounds, survivors and families often deal with emotional scars. Anxiety, depression, and post-traumatic stress are common after serious crashes. Accessing mental health support is a key part of the healing process.
    • Financial Consequences: From medical bills to lost wages, the economic impact of a DUI crash can be overwhelming. Filing a claim may help cover these losses so families can focus on recovery instead of worrying about costs.

If your family has lost a loved one due to an impaired driver, it is critical to connect with an experienced wrongful death attorney. Having legal guidance ensures your family’s rights are protected and that those responsible are held accountable. Acting quickly can make a significant difference in the outcome of your case.
