Lynnwood, WA (July 20, 2025) – Just before midnight on July 18, a collision occurred on southbound Interstate 405 near Alderwood Mall when a Ford pickup truck struck a motorcycle while merging into the second lane.

The 21-year-old driver of the Ford pickup collided with the back tire of the motorcycle, causing the rider and both vehicles to end up on the shoulder of the interstate. The truck driver remained at the scene and contacted emergency services. He and his two passengers were not physically injured.

The motorcyclist was pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities confirmed he was wearing a WSDOT-compliant helmet at the time of the incident. According to the Washington State Patrol, there were no signs of drug or alcohol impairment involved in the crash.

An investigation into the cause of the crash remains ongoing.

    Motorcycle Accidents in Washington

Washington continues to see a high number of serious and fatal motorcycle crashes. These accidents often occur on busy highways like Interstate 405 where heavy traffic and sudden lane changes can quickly lead to tragedy. In 2023, motorcyclists accounted for a significant portion of the state’s roadway fatalities.

Accidents like this highlight the importance of understanding factors that contribute to motorcycle-related injuries:

    • Highway Merging Risks: Sudden lane shifts or merging can result in motorcycles being sideswiped or struck, especially if drivers fail to check blind spots.
    • Rear Tire Contact: Striking a motorcycle’s rear tire is especially dangerous, often leading to the rider being thrown from the bike with significant force.
    • Helmet Use: Helmets reduce the severity of head injuries but cannot completely eliminate the danger, especially during high-speed crashes.
    • Vehicle Awareness: Many drivers overlook motorcycles when scanning traffic. Lack of awareness is a consistent factor in crashes involving larger vehicles.
    • Immediate Medical Attention: In severe motorcycle crashes, quick access to emergency care is critical in improving outcomes. Tragically, not all victims survive long enough to receive this care.

After a loved one has suddenly passed away in a motorcycle crash, it’s important to work with a personal injury attorney who has experience handling cases involving wrongful death accidents. Speaking to a skilled lawyer early can make a major difference in the investigation and your ability to receive compensation and emotional care for your tragic loss. Immediate action helps preserve evidence, clarify liability, and ensure proper medical care is considered from the outset.
